2016 Oracle ITA Junior Masters With Year

MALIBU, Calif.
– It would be hard to find a more beautiful place to hold a junior tennis tournament than the Malibu Racquet Club. With the Pacific Coast Highway visible in one direction and the Santa Monica Mountains in the other, there's not a bad view in the house.

The inaugural Oracle ITA Junior Masters kicked off play with 2 rounds on Thursday morning followed by more matches on Friday, bringing 16 boys and 16 girls from around the US together to battle it out on the courts alongside their collegiate counterparts. Title sponsors Oracle and the ITA have pulled out all the stops for this event. From colorful signage at the club entrance, around the grounds, and on each court to snacks and drinks for the players to VIP sponsor badges to a high-tech photo booth, the Junior Masters just feels special.

The tournament is being run by Sally and Bob Grabham, who also happen to run the USTA Winter Nationals each year, with help from Randy Jenks at UTR. The UTR tournament platform allows for more information to get to the players and parents on a timely basis which makes planning ahead – almost unheard of in most junior tournaments – easy and do-able. As one parent told me, “It was so nice to actually know where the practice courts were ahead of time and when we could use them. That never happens!”

Another unique feature of this tournament is the compass draw and the use of UTR for selection and seeding. Each player is guaranteed four matches throughout the 3-day event, making it more cost-effective for those who had to travel great distances to participate. Each match, regardless of the round of play, counts equally toward the players' Universal Tennis Rating, so there's not the usual stigma attached to back draw play.

Because the event is being held in conjunction with the Oracle ITA College Masters, there are several college coaches around the grounds watching the juniors compete. Some coaches from around SoCal even made the trip to Malibu specifically to watch these potential recruits. In such an intimate setting, it's easy for the coaches to watch the players and chat with their parents while also getting to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

ITA CEO Timothy Russell is committed to making the Junior event special for the participants. He wants to expose these players (and their parents) to the collegiate tennis experience as much as possible while they are still juniors so that playing college tennis is high on their list of goals. He understands the value of exposing young players to college players and matches in order to grow the game starting from its entry point.
