SKILLMAN, NJ (Mar. 12) - The Amherst men's tennis team has reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in Division III after former No. 1 Trinity (TX), winner of last month's Division III ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championship, was upset by No. 11 Carnegie Mellon this week. Amherst was ranked No. 1 in the previous rankings in October, then relinquished the pole position to Trinity after the Tigers' championship run, and are now back on top.

The Trinity Tigers, which while having lost to No. 11 Carnegie Mellon also beat No. 8 Kenyon and No. 25 Cal Lutheran, fell to No. 6 from No. 1 and afforded the five teams ranked No. 2 through No. 6 a one spot boost up the rankings. The men's Top 5 now follows as No. 1 Amherst, No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, No. 3 Middlebury, No. 4 Emory and No. 5 Washington University - St. Louis.

In other Top 5 play, No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps defeated No. 25 Cal Lutheran last week, while No. 5 Wash. U defeated two ranked opponents in No. 12 Case Western and former No. 40 Rochester this week.

Beyond No. 6 Trinity, the No. 7 and No. 8 teams remain the same this week in Johns Hopkins and Kenyon, respectively. Rounding out the Top 10 are two newcomers: No. 9 Pomona-Pitzer moves up from No. 15 after their defeat of No. 11 Carnegie Mellon, while new No. 10 Bowdoin also beat Carnegie Mellon this week to move up from No. 18.

On the women's side, the Top 8 remains unchanged from the last edition, in which Johns Hopkins leapt from No. 4 to No. 1 by virtue of winning the ITA Division III National Women's Team Indoor Championship that week. Johns Hopkins has not played since winning the title and returns to action this Tuesday against Northeastern State.

The No. 2 Emory Eagles defeated No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer on Monday of this week and Azusa Pacific on Wednesday, both by 7-2 scores. No. 3 Williams and No. 4 Amherst both get their spring seasons underway next week, while No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps improved to 8-0 this season with three wins this week, including a 7-2 home victory over the No. 7 Carnegie Mellon Tartans, who are 8-3.

No. 6 Bowdoin won its first three spring matches this week, including two 7-2 wins over No. 34 Wesleyan and No. 38 Trinity (TX). No. 9 Washington University - St. Louis, which earned the inaugural ITA Team Sportsmanship Award from the ITA Division III National Women's Team Indoor Championships earlier this month, moved up one spot in the rankings after posting a 3-2 record over a tough four-day stretch of matches, including two against Top 10 foes Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Bowdoin. The Middlebury Panthers are the final member of the Top 10, and they begin spring match play this weekend with a double-header against No. 20 Skidmore and Rensselaer on Saturday and No. 26 Brandeis on Sunday.

New Entrants: There are no new entrants to the women's Top 40 this week. On the men's side, the Christopher Newport Captains and Chapman Panthers are new to the Top 40, checking in at No. 38 and No. 40, respectively.

Double-Dip: Eight schools have both their men's and women's programs ranked inside the Top 10.
