SEATTLE, Wash. –
The best teams in the country turned to their young guns to help bolster them to victory on day one at 2018 ITA National Division I Team Indoor Championships. Six out of the eight winning teams had freshmen win matches against stiff competition.

Patrick Kypson of Texas A&M took down ninth-ranked Alfredo Perez of Florida 6-4, 3-6, 1-6 to clinch the No. 6 Aggies' 4-0 victory over the No. 11 Gators. The Aggies face No. 3 North Carolina tomorrow at Seattle Tennis Club.

No. 2 Ohio State’s Tim Seibert made quick work of Duke’s Sean Sculley 6-4, 6-2 in the Buckeye’s first round match. He clinched the match and propelled Ohio State into the quarterfinals where they will face No. 7 UCLA.

Keegan Smith Day One MTI

UCLA had a freshman come to their aid as well, as Keegan Smith defeated Illinois’ Alex Brown 7-6(8), 6-3. Smith’s win gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead in a match in which they would go on to advance to the quarterfinals with a 4-2 victory over the Illini.

No. 5 Stanford faced the No. 12 Baylor Bears in the first round. Freshman Axel Geller took down Oracle ITA Masters semifinalist Johannes Schretter in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. The victory bolstered the Cardinal to a lead of 3-1 and they would eventually go on to win 4-2. Stanford plays Georgia in the quarterfinals.

Freshman Benjamin Sigouin of North Carolina scored the first singles point for the Tar Heels with a win over Notre Dame’s Guillermo Cabrera 6-2, 6-1. William Blumberg and Simon Soendergaard followed suit to advance the Tar Heels to the quarterfinals.

Bar Botzer of Wake Forest was another freshman to roll in straight sets, defeating Washington’s Amit Batta 6-3, 6-1. Top-seeded Wake Forest defeated host Washington 4-0 and will face No. 8 USC in the quarterfinals.
