Repeat Winners Begin Surfacing at 2015 ITA Summer Circuit
SKILLMAN, NJ (July 15) - The 2015 ITA Summer Circuit, presented by USTA, was in full swing this past weekend, with each of the nine regions across the nation hosting tournament play. Event action and champions for each site are provided below:
Previous Champions Return to Winner's Circle
Success bred more success for several players in the 2015 ITA Summer Circuit as five regional winners in weeks one and two struck again in week three. TCU sophomore Trevor Johnson followed up his Laguna Niguel doubles title in week two by winning the La Verne singles and doubles titles this weekend. Caitlin Bernard has also won both singles (at Wellesley) and doubles (in Pittsburgh) tournaments in consecutive weeks in the Northeast region. Nico Agrittelley is attempting a Grand Slam of the Texas Region, winning the first two (Abilene Christian and UT Dallas) of four singles tournaments in the region. Jonathan Sheehy and Parker Wynn have also swept the Texas tournaments in doubles.
Ohio State Women Conquer (Western) Michigan
While it wasn't exactly The School Up North, Ohio State's women's tennis team made the most of their trip to the state up north and the campus of Western Michigan, as the Buckeyes won both the women's singles and doubles championships there - and also earned runner-up honors in each draw. Sophomore Anna Sanford won the singles title, with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over teammate Miho Kowase in the final. Sanford then doubled-down with Ohio State teammate Grรขinne O'Neill and won the doubles championship, once again topping Kowase and fellow Buckeye Nicole Flower.
Seven Players Sweep
Seven players won both regional singles and doubles draws this week. Joining Trevor Johnson (at the La Verne Regional) and Anna Sanford (at Western Michigan) with two pieces of hardware won this week were Frances Altick (at Middle Tennessee State), Elena Muller (at UT Dallas), Hadley Berg (at Pacific), Ian Dempster (at Virginia Tech) and Gabby Smith (at Wichita State).
