TEMPE, Ariz. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced that Nithya Kanagasegar (Case Western Reserve), Jake McCartney (Barton College), Maisie Silverman (Bates College) and David Warren (Rice) are the four finalists for the inaugural ITA Ann Lebedeff Leadership Award, endowed by Billie Jean King.
The ITA Ann Lebedeff Leadership Award was created to honor a recent college graduate who played college tennis and demonstrated excellence on and off the court, leadership on his or her team as well as on his or her college campus and in his or her community. The annual recipient of the award will have demonstrated grit (i.e. passion and perseverance towards long-term goals), a commitment to social justice and equality and will have pushed others to be leaders in addition to demonstrating his or her own leadership.
The finalist’s materials (i.e., personal statement, resume, letters from their coach, teammate and institution’s President) will be submitted to the ITA Ann Lebedeff Leadership Award Selection Panel. The ITA Ann Lebedeff Leadership Award winner will be honored by the ITA at a special awards ceremony in addition to receiving a specially-engraved gift and post-graduate scholarship. The ITA will also donate $1,000 to the tennis program of the institution from which the award winner graduated.
“The four finalists for the inaugural ITA Ann Lebedeff Leadership Award boast impressive resumes and display all of the attributes for which the award stands,” said ITA CEO Timothy Russell. “While the selection panel will have a difficult decision to make, we look forward to announcing the winner later this spring. We would like to once again thank Billie Jean King, a longtime friend and supporter of college tennis, for endowing this award and honoring the legacy of one of our sport’s greatest coaches and educators in Ann Lebedeff.”
Each finalist submitted a personal statement as part of the application process, which described the role that tennis and higher education played in their life, the lessons learned, examples of community service and a description of their plans upon graduation, describing hopes and dreams to be pursued.
Below are highlighted items from the finalists.
Nithya Kanagasegar (Case Western Reserve University, Division III)
a.Communicated her concerns with discrimination and injustices with the Athletics Director at Case Western and moderated the first Sustained Dialogue group in the country specifically for student-athletes to eliminate any future issues.
b.Assists with sponsoring on-court events to either raise money for or to directly interact with local youth to provide them with tennis, health, fitness, literacy, and creative expressions programs (such as Inner City Tennis Clinics (ICTC)).
c.Through her experiences in higher education, she learned the significance of striving for social justice, and has been fortunate that tennis has provided her with a way to transform her community and encourage equality.
Jake McCartney (Barton College, Division II)
a.Became an Orientation Leader to guide new students into college life.
b.Involved in a Greek organization that introduced him to philanthropy work and fundraising such as Walk to End Alzheimer’s, raising money for a member’s child for autism, and donating to the North Carolina Autism Foundation while also helping his peers with their personal development to grow them into leaders that can positively affect the community.
c.Barton College introduced the 4C’s: Competition, Campus, Community & Classroom which he adopted as his motto to positively affect his leadership development.
Maisie Silverman (Bates College, Division III)
a.Serves on the Bates College SAAC (Student Athletic Advisory Committee).
b.Her philosophy when competing is, “the most important point is the one I am playing”.
c.Coaching children has been rewarding for her and started some programs to introduce tennis to elementary schools.
d.Volunteers for the Special Olympics.
David Warren (Rice University, Division I)
a.Avid partner working with Friends of Jaclyn Foundation (FOJ), an organization that pairs kids suffering from brain tumors with sports teams.
b.While college tennis has given him the tools to work hard, persevere through adverse situations, and develop incredible team leadership skills, his engineering degree has helped him to think deeper about the broader impact he will soon make.
c.Has learned to use the opportunities given to him to help others in need.
